Amy Winehouse recently came to Dubai, and the show was a disaster.. The crowd booed her off the stage as she picked her nails and looked like she didn’t want to be there. People wanted their money back, (paying Dhs.500 for a ticket- nearly a hundred quid!). Fans were angry and disappointed.

When I see an artist with so much talent, lost and struggling like this… I feel terrified. The pressure, the expectation that they’re under, none of us can understand. I miss the Amy from before the beehive and the heroin..

It reminded me of Lauryn Hill…

Lauryn has been my idol since I was 9 years old. Beautiful voice, killer lyrics, fierce rap skills… in her prime she was untouchable. I saw her in Sister act 2, discovered The Fugees and then the Miseducation became like a bible to me.

I saw her in a united tour of The Fugees long after the Mseducation and long after the MTV Unplugged concert (which was also brilliant).. but she didnt really shine then.. Wyclef stole the show.

Then a few years ago I saw her at a solo concert in London.. and it was heart breaking to watch. She didn’t seem all there mentally.. not the beautiful Lauryn of the past. Her voice was rough and grainy.. she shouted the raps.. But it was confusing.. some of the new arrangements were actually really interesting. She performed a new song called “lose myself” going in a fresh direction.  The lyrics stuck in my mind, ‘I had to lose myself so I could make it better’..

She been through a lot and that you can tell

She’s not the Lauryn Hill we all fell in love with, but while he voice might not be the same, while you can see she’s not the same.. she is still  out there giving it and trying to ‘make it better’

.. I’ll be seeing her again at the Miami Jazz gardens..

Really hope I can get a glimpse of her spirit shining
