Return To Nature (I)

by Tao Yuanming

While young, I was not used to worldly cares,
And hills became my natural compeers,
But by mistakes I fell in mundane snares
And thus entangled was for thirty years.
A caged bird would long for wonted wood,
And fish in tanks for native pools would yearn.
Go back to till my southern fields I would.
To live a rustic life why not return?
My plot of ground is but ten acres square;
My thatched cottage has eight or nine rooms.
In front I have peach trees here and plums there;
O’er back eaves willow trees and elms cast glooms.
A village can be seen in distant dark,
Where plumes of smoke rise and waft in the breeze.
In alley deep a dog is heard to bark,
And cocks crow as if o’er mulberry trees.
Into my courtyard no one should intrude,
Nor rob my private rooms of peace and leisure.
After long years of abject servitude,
Again in nature I find homely pleasure.

ILLUSTRADO WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE

I just came back from the Illustrado Women of Substance 2012. Its the first time I’ve been to the annual event, which celebrates Filipino Women! A wonderful initiative. :)

FILIPINO BEAUTY

Being born to a Filipina mother, I have experienced first hand how spiritually, mentally and physically beautiful Filipino women are…

My mother in the Philippines (1985) maganda! ;-)

HOPE.

Personally I think the most beautiful thing about Filipinos is the ability to look at the positive side and remain hopeful no matter what challenges life faces us with.

I have met Filipino domestic workers in Dubai who have been wrongly abused, and yet remain grateful. The pain that they endure with smiles and laughter, and the unfaltering faith they have in God is a constant inspiration. It’s the same beautiful smile fraught with struggle and pain that I have seen in the Cebu women’s prison.. most of the women were wrongly accused or arrested and detained for petty crime, and because they are poor it can take years to be freed. Extremely sad… and yet they still sing, pray, laugh and smile…

PROVIDERS OF CARE, POSITIONS OF POWER!

From care-givers to politicians, Filipino women excel in supporting their families and their country. Filipino women are as much bread winners for the family as men are and you have many women in positions of power- even a female President. The Philippines is miles ahead of other nations in women’s rights! & for that pinoys across the world should feel extremely proud!

NIKON PHOTO COMPETITION

As part of this years event they held a competition to capture an image of what it means to be a woman of substance.

So I will leave you with a few of the fabulous images taken.. enjoy! :)

Listen to the music..

7 Mar

A true story, and some serious food for thought!
“A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the
violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about
45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that
thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to
work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was a musician
playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried
up to meet his schedule. A minute later, the violinist received his first
dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping
continued to walk. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to
listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again.
Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tugged
him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally
the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all
the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the
parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for
a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He
collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one
noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the foremost
musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever
written on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing
in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston and the seats
averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was
organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about
perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a
commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour do we perceive beauty? Do
we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected
context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not
have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world
playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?”
